With just five years of service, 31-year-old constable Paul Clark was the least experienced member of the Newham crime squad but had been given the prize of interviewing two of the most significant and menacing crime figures in the UK. The opportunity was part of Mac’s style of mentoring young crime fighters by letting them learn on the job. Clark, it would be fair to say, was both elated and shitting himself at the prospect.

Stevie Hunt made no comment during the interview at Dagenham police station. But just before it started, he speculated about what might happen to Billy Allen, the complainant. ‘He’ll probably end up hanging over a gate with something in his head. He has lots of enemies. It won’t be me. I’ll be having dinner with my solicitor in Bermuda,’ a police log recorded him saying.

Davey Hunt was even more intimidating and Clark would never forget the menace that the Long Fella exuded while he swabbed the inner walls of his mouth for DNA. Before the interview started Hunt had prepared a statement in which he claimed never to have met or spoken to Allen but confirmed his presence at court in February. This, he said, was at the invitation of Matthews, a family friend, but Hunt denied any involvement in violence or threats. He also denied any knowledge of the stolen champagne found at Woolston Manor.11

Clark decided he was going in hard with the Long Fella.
